All through the Odyssey, we are indicated instances of families: great ones that flourish and terrible ones that don't. As Telemakhos battles to turn into a man and Odysseus battles back home, the idea of solid family life is pushed. Toward the end, when all contentions are settled and Odysseus is brought together with spouse and child, the exercise that an assembled family can conquer any deterrents is appeared and is one that the present families should regard. As the Odyssey starts, we see a family in chaos. Odysseus' whereabouts are obscure. Penelope has gone through four years keeping the admirers under control and went through 20 years weeping for Odysseus. What's more, Telemakhos has grown up befuddled and uncertain of himself, without a genuine dad figure. All the while, therefore, we see a realm likewise in chaos. Ithaca has no ruler, henceforth no father figure. Furthermore, the children of the realm, thus the admirers, have no direction and act in a horrifying way. They eat and drink throughout the day, gradually draining Odysseus' cows and wine stock. They bet and continually irritate Penelope and Telemakhos. As Telemakhos, who is uninformed of how genuine family life ought to be, goes looking for his dad, he finds out about family life. In Pylos, he meets Nestor, who asks his child, Peisistratus, to go with him. This is significant in light of the fact that it is the first run through Telemakhos has a genuine companion. Film Analysis of the Matrix free essay sample

Since the development of film, numerous motion pictures have earned their place as benchmarks in film history, for example, Casablanca, resident kane, and The Wizard of Oz. These have been (and still are) viewed as notable instances of inventive and instinctive filmmaking. In today’s society, films are stuffed with embellishments, regardless of whether its discharges, blasts, or outsiders; a few movies these days can even bring in cash without a decent plot, peppering the watcher with relentless activity successions with no idea for story or character improvement (Avatar, Transformers, and so forth. There are a great many individuals that head out to see motion pictures like this consistently and are engaged, however experienced moviegoers are not all that excited by this activity marinated incompetence. Great activity films are composed and coordinated by individuals that care similarly about visuals and characters, and not simply heaving embellishments at the onlooker and tr usting the surge of thoughtless gear will give them cash to make a string of similarly terrible spin-offs and knockoffs. We will compose a custom paper test on Film Analysis of the Matrix or on the other hand any comparable point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page The Matrix, (composed and coordinated by the wachowski Brothers) is one such film. It impeccably merges together hidden imagery, enhancements, and Visual style to make one of the best sci-fi movies ever. The Matrix contains numerous occasions of imagery that run from strict to philosophical. Gnosticism is the principle strict impact in the grid; (Gnosticism as a branch of Christianity, in which information rather than confidence is the thing that its adherents make progress toward). In The network, the principle gathering of characters has broken liberated from the figment of the framework. Basically, information is the thing that liberates them, (just individuals that have become somewhat mindful that the framework is a dream are picked to be saved from it). The Gnostic form of God made the world, but at the same time is liable for the entirety of the enduring that happens in it. In any case, the picked Gnostics rise over the enduring with their freshly discovered quest for information. The lattice matches this thought with the character of the planner. The draftsman made the lattice, and is liable for all enduring in it; But the not many that presume the misrepresentation of the grid break free and see reality of what it truly is. The most predominant philosophical impact is Platos cavern. Platos cavern is, at its most straightforward, a thought that this present reality is a hallucination, clarified in his composing The Republic. In the cavern purposeful anecdote, a few people are bound in a cavern with their heads confronting the divider, incapable to knock some people's socks off. Behind them there are various lights throwing shadows onto the divider. These individuals (as they can't stop people in their tracks and see outside the cavern) accept that this present reality is totally comprised of the shadows. One day somebody gets away from their bonds and recognizes the truth about the world. He thusly attempts to free different detainees and show them reality with regards to life. This thought is likewise reflected in The Matrix; the network (the world mankind lives in) Is phony, and the individuals that have gotten away return into it to attempt to free others. Embellishments in film can be spoken to by a wide range of ideas; and The Matrix is no special case. The Wachowskis are enormous comic book fans, and drew from their warmth of that medium to make the film. The battle scenes resist the laws of material science and are for the most part made with the utilization of Wire Fu (the name gets from the utilization of wires to do unthinkable tricks in Martial expressions activity films). Practically all the battle scenes grasp this method to do unimaginable things, for example, running on dividers, hopping over colossal holes and battling in mid air. Another celebrated impact from The Matrix is the shot time impact. The impact is when time stops and the camera flies unreservedly around characters and articles suspended in mid air. This impact shows the crowd the activity in the scenes without overpowering them with an excessive amount of quick development. What's more, when the impact is matched with various examples of moderate movement; the effect of the film is expanded cosmically. Visual style is one of the movies major solid focuses which separate it from different movies, for example, Star Wars, or Independence day. The Matrix and this present reality have numerous unpretentious contrasts that different them; for a certain something, the grid is constantly tinted in green though this present reality (in the film) is shown in a more standardized way. The film further separates the two settings with their physical portrayal. The main piece of the Matrix we are indicated is a city, loaded with straight lines, similar to a Grid. Thomas Anderson’s Workplace is an office loaded with desk areas, which re authorizes the mindset that the Matrix is counterfeit, similar to the lines of code that we in the long run observe make up the lattice. The other primary setting is the boat â€Å"The Nebuchadnezzar†. The boat has straight lines, but at the same time is brimming with Curves and other natural shapes. The costuming in the film is additionally exceptionally novel, at whatever point the fundamental characters enter the Matrix; they are dressed in Leather, suites, as well as shades. The outfits separate the characters from the dullness of the Matrix. The Camera in The Matrix is exceptionally dynamic contrasted with different movies. There are huge amounts of authorial shots in the film, cameras fly through the air, zoom and break up from PC screens to cross examination chambers, and the setting can change from shot to shot in one scene. The idea of the camera is another idea drawn from The Wachowski’s love of comic books; where the camera can for all intents and purposes be set anyplace. The Matrix is seen by numerous individuals as a straightforward science fiction activity film, however scarcely any grip how inventive and natural of a film it is. It gives us that the science fiction sort doesnt consistently include outsiders and spaceships, yet that most dangers to mankind start from humankind itself. The film utilizes embellishments as an instrument to propel the story, and not as an approach to divert the crowd from regions the film needs quality in. It may not exceed expectations in each classification, however it falls flat at none. The Matrix isn't just one of historys best sci-fi films, yet perhaps the best film ever.

Laws, agreements and customs are decides that shape our regular day to day existences. These go back for quite a long time. There are various components that make up a legitimate agreement that can be utilized in business today, these comprise of the accompanying. Offer Offers are made to sell or purchase an item from an individual or organization. One-sided offers will be offers that apply to everybody, for example an advert in a paper. Acknowledgment Acknowledgment is when the two gatherings consent to the terms and conditions expressed in the agreement and are both mindful that they are legitimately bound to the agreement. At the point when an individual acknowledges the offer the agreement is agreed upon. Rough Tops acknowledged a proposal from Weathering Heights as they consented to buy  £50,000 worth of hardware to be dispatched and conveyed by first February 2011. They consented to the terms and conditions and the two gatherings are legitimately bound to the agreement. Correspondence Correspondence between the two gatherings should be steady as every individual should be sure about what they are consenting to and furthermore should be kept on top of it should anything change in the agreement. When reviewing the agreement it ought to be unmistakably discussed, particularly with cost. The purchaser must know about the last expense in such a case that the cost included contained concealed costs then the contact isn’t legitimate and there are reason for objection. Bill and Ben, the proprietors of Rocky Tops, needed to speak with Julie so as to disclose to her that her third exercise has been dropped. They did so 10 days before the third exercise by means of a letter. The letter expressed that on the off chance that she neglects to rebook inside multi week she will relinquish her cash for that meeting. Legitimateness When reviewing the contact everything expressed must be legitimate. You can’t put whatever is illegal as it will make the agreement invalid. Rough Tops did this while making a deal with Julie when she needed to book a square of 6 climbing exercises. Rough Tops entered with the correct aims as they really intended to proceed with the agreement. Contextual investigation Contracts: â€Å"Bill and Ben are sharp stone climbers and wish to build up another business† Partnership contract â€Å"They plan to have their excellent opening on first March 2011 and as of now have premises confirmed† Estate operator contract â€Å"Rocky Tops have consented to buy 50,000 worth of gear from Weather Statures to be dispatched and conveyed by first February 2011† Terms of provider contract â€Å"Rock Tops will likewise be offering guidance and exercises on their indoor climbing divider to both beginner rock climbers and the more experienced† Obligation Insurance Contract â€Å"Nick sees the banner and purchases another arrangement of ropes and crampons† Deal â€Å"Julie goes to Rock Tops and books a square of 6 climbing exercises and signs a record expressing that the meetings can be dropped by either herself or Rocky Tops inside 7 days notice†

At the opposite extreme, friends and loved ones may downplay and brush off your diagnosable psychological disorder as simply nerves. Heres the information you need to separate fact from fiction. The Truth About Common Misconceptions About Phobias Lets clear up some of the common misconceptions about phobias. You Are Crazy If You Have a Phobia Crazy is a loaded term sometimes carelessly thrown about by the general public to describe people who have a wide variety of mental health challenges. The word conjures up images of long-term, incurable psychological disorders  as well as insane asylums and potentially dangerous behavior. Actually, all types of phobias are highly treatable with the guidance of a clinician and there are a variety of successful approaches, such as cognitive behavior therapy techniques. Treatment of specific phobia can be as short as one to three sessions. Phobias Are Just Overrated Fears How often are people with phobias told to simply deal with it or get over it? Those who never suffered from a phobia may find it difficult to comprehend the depths of terror that a phobia can cause. The difference between a fear and a phobia is the latter is life-limiting and affects your:    Personal relationships    Ability to perform your job or go to school    Ability to do essential daily tasks, including taking a shower or going to the grocery store Simply confronting an ordinary fear may be helpful, but confronting a phobia successfully usually requires the help of a mental health professional. Phobias Are Deeply Rooted Personality Traits Those who believe this myth erroneously think you cant overcome phobias and Thats just the way she is, may be a common reaction to your fear from friends and family. Although some phobias are more difficult to treat than others, there is little evidence to support this personality traits theory. The success rate of both short- and long-term phobia treatment is very high. Phobias Are Genetic There may be some truth to this long-standing myth, although research is far from conclusive. According to researchers Villafuerte and Burmeister in their presentation named Untangling Genetic Networks of Panic, Phobia, Fear, and Anxiety, first-degree relatives of those with phobias are more likely to develop a phobia. This was especially true in twins. Children Automatically Develop Parental Phobias Although there is some evidence children are more likely to develop phobias if their parents have them, having one or both parents diagnosed with a phobia is just one of many risk factors. You can also develop a phobia from watching a stranger have a bad experience, such as falling down a flight of stairs, or from seeing something unfortunate happen to someone in a movie. As some believe both nature and nurture play a role in phobia development, it is not surprising that much depends on other adults influence in the childs life, the childs individual personality and how parents present their phobia in the home. Myths about phobias and other mental health disorders are rampant, and information gathered from family or friends may be inaccurate. If you have a fear affecting your life, consider seeking professional guidance. With proper treatment, you can successfully overcome most phobias.

Acc 561 Week 2 Paper - 1305 Words

Running Head: Four Types of Business Brandon Mckinley University of Phoenix ACC/561 Introduction An Entrepreneur is a person who forms and operates a business. Entrepreneurs form and start companies by themselves, or with partners. Most of the time companies which are started by entrepreneurs are relatively small in size, but some grow into huge corporations, such as Microsoft which is owned by Bill Gates. Entrepreneurs have four different options when starting a business, which include a sole proprietorship, Partnership, limited liability company, and also a corporation. Each form has its advantages and also disadvantages depending on what the type of business is, and also what service it provides. Sole Proprietorship†¦show more content†¦Other advantages of corporations include that they have a ranking of officers that run the company from the CEO, to the CFO and down to the next chief officer. Also, corporations are taxed at the corporate level using corporate income tax rates filed under the form 1120. Another advantage of a corporation is that if a corporation becomes insolvent, its owners and shareholders will not be liable beyond their equity investments in the corporation – creditors cannot go after the stockholders’ personal assets to exhaust their debts.(Advantages, 2009) One of the last advantages of a corporation is that if they are publicly traded, shareholders are able to sale their stock through stockbrokers. Disadvantages of corporations include that sometimes they are double taxed. If dividends are paid out from the corporation to stockholders, then those stockholders are taxed on their personal income tax returns also. The last disadvanta ge is that since it is managed by chief officers, stockholders are not able to make any managerial decisions as far as the company is concerned. Limited Liability Company The last of the four types includes the limited liability company, also known as a LLC. An LLC is an unincorporated form of business that carries characteristics of all of the other three forms of business. An LLC can choose to be taxed as a partnership, the owners can manage the business, and the owners have limited liability for debts and obligations of the partnership. I Am An Exciting Day - 1296 Words

Today is going to be an exciting day. I’m going out with my family and the trading group from our village for the first time ever. Our village is called â€Å"Esuabout fasemoswa †, located at the opposite side near the Tigris river beside Mesopotamia, five miles away. People often pass by our village and stay the night. We started out early before the golden sphere was awakened. Mother hurried me to eat faster. We had to get into our vessels and head out. We had split up into small groups, five people per canoe, heading onto the blue. The river was an amazing Tigris god with animals swimming in and out of the sapphire ripples. Comparison of Theories of Attachment - 2073 Words

A Criticism of ‘cupboard love the ory’, were Harlow’s study involving rhesus monkeys (1959). He separated new born monkeys from their mothers and raised them in a cage each containing a blanket, he noticed the monkeys became attached to the blanket but were concerned when the blanket was removed. But to determine whether it was food or close comfort was more important, Harlow placed a monkey with two ‘different mothers’, one being a ‘mother’ made of wire but with a bottle attached and the other being a ‘mother’ made of a soft blanket but with no bottle attached. Harlow found that the monkey spent most time with the clothed mother, and concluded that monkeys have an unlearned need for ‘contact comfort’ which is as essential as the need for food. He also found that the clothed mother served as a secure environment for the monkey. When Harlow placed a ‘fear stimuli’ in the cage the monkey would explore it before retreating back to clothed mo ther for security, however when the clothed mother was removed the monkey would cower in fear and freeze. Ainsworth (1967) conducted a ‘Ganda project’, which looked into the individual differences in children’s attachment to their mothers/primary carer. She used babies ranging from ages between 15 weeks – 2 years old; they were studied every 2 weeks for 2 hours a time over a nine months. Free Market Economy Capitalism and Freedom by Milton...

What is a free market really? By definition a â€Å"Free market† is a summary term for an array of exchanges that take place in society† (Econlib). However there is more to it than that, in fact there is much to be learned and understood from a free market. A free market is a place (physical or not) where a person(s) in a community are able to go and exchange goods based on supply and demand. A truly free market has no barriers to entrance or to exit, and many goods and services. In any case people within the market are able to distribute goods freely based on free choice in trade for whatever they have agreed upon whether that is government notary(s) or other goods or services. What he means is that we (in America) have become so accustom to having freedom that it seems to be more of a natural gift (as it should be) and less of an earned right. Although this in itself does not seem important, if the only way to have a (free) market, and so have economic freedom is to have this â€Å"newfound† freedom, then the best way to organize economic activity is to use markets. Without markets there cannot be a â€Å"fair† dispersal of our scarce resources. Scarcity is something that often people do not think of but it is relevant to each person. There are a limited number of resources on the earth and once those are gone, there is nothing left to trade with and nothing left to be gained. Although we are a very long time from something that extreme happening it needs to be understood that there is a very real possibility that we will run out of key resources in the future. Because there is scarcity a community must decide how to allocate its resources effectively. Behind the Sun Free Essays

Behind the Sun (Abril Despedacado) was a thought-provoking and captivating work of art by Walter Salles, Sergio Machado and Karim Ainouz; who collaboratively derived the story from an Albanian book (Broken April by Ismail Kadare). Behind the Sun was set in 1910 in the Northeast region of Brazil. The movie unfolds with this line, â€Å"This is the story of me, my brother, and a shirt in the wind†¦ † The line was narrated by a charming young boy, Pacu ( We will write a custom essay sample on Behind the Sun or any similar topic only for you Order Now com/english-4-b-calpac/"Ravi Ramos Lacerda). He comes from a family of peasants, who grows sugarcane for a living. Pacu’s oldest brother had just been murdered at the beginning of the movie. The setting was miserable, to say the least. The opening of the movie only matched this misery in the setting by showing a gory sight of a blood-stained shirt. The shirt belonged to Pacu’s oldest brother, who was then the latest victim in their family’s feud with the Ferreiras family. The two families had been warring over land and territorial issues. Tradition dictates that the Breves family should avenge the death of their family member, but not long before the stain has turned from red to yellow. â€Å"When the blood on the shirt turns yellow, someone will die,† Pacu narrated further. The surviving eldest son of the Breves family, Tonio (Rodrigo Santaro), did what he had to do, according to their tradition — he killed the eldest son of the Ferreiras family. Tonio felt that the vicious cycle of killing and revenge, disguising as a noble tradition, had to end; but he felt powerless to end it, so he allowed it to continue by killing the eldest son in the other family. As a result, he was next in line to be killed. But the charming and much too adorable boy, Pacu, had a way of keeping Tonio alive. Pacu died for Tonio. He knew at a tender age that sacrifice, an act of love, was the key to end the vicious cycle that their family was caught in. In relation to Brazilian notions of ethnicity, the deep set often mysterious-looking eyes of the Breves brothers were captivating. Ironically, the softness of their looks couldn’t match with the ferocious tradition they keep. The film is a story about a strong family bond, so strong in fact, that one had to be prepared to die in revenge of the other. Moreover, one was willing to die to let the other live and move on. The photography and sequence of shots in the movie are absolute astounding and even poetic in nature. It seemed that every beat of its music matched with every frame in the screen with grace and much respect to art. Their clothing was not far from imaginable, the family bonding was very plausible, considering how tight family bonding was (still is) in Brazil. If it were a movie set in this time and age, it wouldn’t have been plausible, with all the killings. But it was in 1910, when a lot of things, like respect for life, have yet to be discovered. Certainly, the work of art from the sounds to the overall direction and cinematography helped in establishing the depth and heaviness of the movie. Truth be told, Hollywood cannot create movie that is as profound as this without resorting to much gimmickry. What Behind the Sun producers did that Hollywood won’t dare to try is to simply tell a tragic story in the most poetic way possible. It was a wonderful movie, overall. It was heavy in the mind, and it certainly will not be easy to forget. How to cite Behind the Sun, Papers

Running Through the 6 free essay sample

One of the best rap music artists out there right now is Aubrey Graham; better known by his stage name, Drake. Aubrey Graham grew up in the streets of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Drake is 28 years old and currently resides in Miami, Florida. About two weeks ago, Drake came out with a new mixtape called; If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late. This mixtape is by Drake but it also features some other rappers throughout the album such as Party Next Door, Lil Wayne, and Travi$ Scott. This mixtape consists of 17 songs: Legend, Energy, 10 Bands, No Tellin’, Madonna, 6 God, Star67, Preach (which ft. Party Next Door), Wednesday Night Interlude, Used To (which ft. Lil’ Wayne), 6 Man, Now Forever, Company (which ft. Travi$ Scott), You The 6, Jungle, 6 PM In New York, and last but not least; my favorite song on the mixtape, Know Yourself. Most of his songs are about him growing up in the streets of Toronto during the early 2000’s. We will write a custom essay sample on Running Through the 6 or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This mixtape was released about two weeks ago and it was a long awaited mixtape. The reason I listened to this mixtape was because of twitter and because of almost every social media network out there. I also listened to it because I have been a fan of most of Drake’s previous mixtapes, albums and songs. So, I thought I would give this mixtape a try because of all the hype; and I did just that, and really enjoyed the songs and now listen to the mixtape in the car while I drive. Generally, most of Drake’s songs from his albums or mixtapes are usually either really sad songs or they are about his life growing up. Sometimes I get annoyed with his sad songs, but this new mixtape did not have many of these sad songs. Instead most of these songs in the new mixtape were about his life and would be known and called by the youth population today as â€Å"bangers.† Before I heard this album, I already knew Aubrey Graham was born and raised in Toronto and that his father is Jewish and his mother is African-American. Because of knowing this, you would know that Aubrey Graham is not as â€Å"hard† as other rappers or as â€Å"ghetto† as other rappers. The best song on the mixtape was definitely Know Yourself. This song is about his life in Toronto in his teenage years. In the song he says â€Å"I was running through the 6 with my woes.† It took me a while to understand what he meant by this line, but thanks to some help from some friends I began to understand. Here is the explanation, by â€Å"the 6†, he means Toronto because Toronto is known as the 6. And by woes, he means his homies or friends. So pretty much he is running through Toronto with his friends doing hoodrat things. I believe that this mixtape is one of the best ones he has ever made and it is one of the best mixtapes that has been released in the past few months. I think he should have put a few more songs on the album and made it a little more than 20 songs. Other than that the mixtape was awesome and I will listen to it until I get bored. If you like Drake or even Rap and Hip Hop, you will love this mixtape. If you are a true music fan you should listen to this mixtape. Every teenager or young adult should listen to this mixtape and would enjoy the music presented on the mixtape.

Mike sager creates emtional appeal Essays - Mike Sager, Sheri Fink

Mike sager creates emtional appeal Thomas Morgan Professor Murphy English 093 April 25, 2013 The article that used emotional appeal the most was Mike Sagers The Man Who Never Was The reader became emotional attached with the article because of how Sager wrote about Todd Marinovich and how the author used these emotions to connect with the reader. Sager uses emotional appeal to create a certain feelings towards Marinovichs because of all the bad decisions he endured during his fall from fame. The Deadly Choice at Memorial by Sheri Fink uses emotional appeal throughout her article and tells a story that creates feelings of sorrow and sympathy for the people ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Fink didnt use emotional appeal in the same way as Sager did, and Fink didnt connect with the reader in the same way Sager did. The reader thought The Last Abortion Doctor uses emotional appeal the least because Richardson never seems to connect to the reader and doesnt create any great emotional appeal. All the articles are great to read and create some emotions, but Sagers article used emoti onal appeal the most and left the reader with a longer, lasting feeling of wow. From the start, Sager used emotional appeal with the description of Todd life and how he was dubbed the Robo Quarterback by the press and how the future of this young star was so bright. Then Sager wrote of how Todd is viewed today, which resulted in the reader becoming interested in how all these hardships affected Todds life. This is where the article got really interesting and was emotionally more explosive then the other essays. Sager wrote to get the reader to become attached to a young football players dreams of making it to the NFL and having a great career. Sager wrote about Todds travels through pee wee football and that is where he started to excel at quarterback. Then to high school and college football teams and finally the years as a pro quarterback. This is the part of the essay where a bond started to be created between Todd and the reader. Sager creates this bond through the use of emotional appeal by telling of how good Todd was in football and how the expectation of his parents and coach affected his life in and out of football. Plus, when Sager writes about Todds drug use the reader becomes emotionally connected and feelings of how could someone with all that potential throw his career and life away. Sager use this story to create emotions of sadness and anger towards Todd because of how he ruin all the opportunities that were available to him. The author uses emotional appeal so the reader could ask themselves how could this happen and why these opportunities were taken for granted. Sager has the reader thinking how great life was for Todd, but also creates the sense that something was missing out of Todds life. The emotions that Sager brings out of are ones of sympathy and sorrow for Todd and his family. Sager writes in the beginning of the article how Todds career started and how the bar was set so high by his father and coaches and then writes how these expectation effected his actions.. This has the reader feeling that there were outside influences that causes Todd to go awry and have him do things that were not normal to a young boy. Than when Sager writes about Todds drug use an emotional opinion is created. The author tells about how involved Todds father was in raising a future quarterback and all the expectations that were placed on him. Sager uses emotional appeal in writing about all the workouts and diets that Todds father put him on and how these programs were very strenuous and time consuming, which gives the reader an impression this is too much for young Todd to handle. Sager writes how Todd seems to be longing for something else then football and he reaches out to drugs to fill all these voids in his life. After reading about Todds family ties to the University of Southern California and about all his fathers friends at the Oakland Raiders, the reader feels like there was way

Affirmative Action Essays (1784 words) - Social Inequality

Affirmative Action Essays (1784 words) - Social Inequality Affirmative Action Jean Miller #43252 American Heritage 100 7:00 am - 7:50 am M, W, F Brother J. Baker Affirmative Action Affirmative action is a growing argument among our society. It is multifaceted and very often defined vaguely. Some can define affirmative action as the ability to strive for equality and inclusiveness. Others might see it as a quota-based system for different minority groups. ?Affirmative action was originally designed to help minorities? (Gross, 1996). Is affirmative action fair? Are minority groups on equal footing? Is gaining employment for minorities difficult? Is education easily obtained for the minority groups of people? Affirmative action endeavors to answer all these questions, while allowing society to believe harmony exists. ?Affirmative action was originally designed to help minorities, but women, especially white women, have made the greatest gains as a result of these programs? (Boston, 1996). Is affirmative action fair? In 1974, a woman named Rose was turned down for a supervisory job in favor of a male. She was told that she was the most qualified person, but the position was going to be filled by a man, because he had a family to support. Five years before that, when Rose was about to fill an entry-level position in banking, a personnel officer outlined the woman?s pay scale, which was $25 to $50 a month less than what men were being paid in the same position. Rose was furious because she felt this was discriminating to her. She confronted the personnel officer and he saw nothing wrong with it. In 1977, a woman working for a company as a clerk was informed that she should be at home raising a family. She allowed the comments to persist until she was given two weeks notice that her position was no longer available. Upon leaving the position she learned the company had given the clerk position to a man because he had a family to support. Thanks to affirmative action, situations like the ones mentioned are becoming less frequent and employers are correcting these situations quickly and efficiently. Affirmative action has definitely helped women and minorities in their careers, but it has yet to succeed in the goal of equality in the business world for women and minorities. As more and more women are faced with discrimination in large firms, more have decided to strike out on their own. ?Observers argue that women have made huge strides with the help of affirmative action. They now hold 40 percent of all corporate middle-management jobs, and the number of women-owned businesses has grown by 57 percent since 1982? (Dundul, 1995). ?Affirmative action was designed to give qualified minorities a chance to compete on equal footing with Whites? (Chappell, 1995). Equal opportunities for the African Americans, for the most part, has remained more wishful-thinking than fact. African American students are continuing to struggle for an education. In society today, many educational institutions offer scholarships for minorities. Ethnic minority students can further their education from the elementary level to the Ph.D level. However, for a minority student, all the financial assistance in the world, is not going to pay for the racial discrimination that they may receive, while attending a white educational facility. In 1982 a young African American man had been accepted into an Ivy league institution. His family were proud of his achievements and his ability to become someone great. As time progressed, our African American student dressed like a black, walked like a black, looked like a black, but to keep well with his professors talked, and acted like his white counterparts. Equal opportunities for African Americans continue to be hard work and wishful-thinking. African American business owners are still competing against their White counterparts. Society labels and stereotypes certain ethic people. For example, when a person enters an electronic store and the owner is white, the person shopping continues to look at the items on the shelf. When an individual walks into an electronic store owned by an African American, the shopper may believe some of the items are stolen. Affirmative action is a written law requesting that minorities have equal opportunities however, society dictates how the opportunities will be given. African American workers are experiencing an unemployment rate twice that of Whites. The low

Employee Negative Habits and Attitudes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Employee Negative Habits and Attitudes - Essay Example Unfortunately, bad workplace habits and negative employee attitudes create serious problems: poor workplace performance, workplace conflicts, and failure to achieve strategic organizational outcomes are just some of the numerous effects caused by bad workplace habits on organizations and their members. Bad habits make suffer both employees and employers. Workers may loose their job and the reputation of the company may suffer greatly. Bad workplace habits are numerous and varied. No one knows what exactly can fire the flame of conflict and disobedience within an organization. At times, employees can be extremely sophisticated in their negative habits and attitudes. Yet, in most instances, bad habits can be easily detected and addressed. Absenteeism and sick list abuse is, probably, one of the worst employee habits. Dozens of workers miss work intentionally, since they are unwilling to attend their workplace and are pretty satisfied with getting their sick list payments on time. Other s are convinced that spending half of the work day in a smoking room is absolutely normal and even necessary for their emotional stability. Such employees will not rush to deal with their obligations. Most probably, they perceive their work as some kind of entertainment and do not understand that the success of business and its profitability largely depends upon the contribution each and every worker makes on a daily basis. Other bad habits include gossiping and unnecessary sarcasm: some employees cannot be serious even when it is crucial for the organization’s survival. Employees may tend to withhold important information or will make excuses every time they fail to cope with their responsibilities. These are further supplemented by the negative attitudes, which employees hold about their work: it is no secret that not all employees like their job and these negative attitudes have far-reaching implications for strategic performance within organizations. Bad habits and negati ve attitudes of employees affect all aspects of organizational performance. Employees who miss work, fail to cope with their obligations, find excuses, and do not assume responsibility for their acts cannot be useful for the organization. Instead, they increase the burden of organizational problems and concerns. Moreover, their presence in organizations always comes at a cost: they receive salaries and benefits for doing nothing. It should be noted, that bad habits and negative attitudes work like an infection – they can infect other employees, who slowly learn a valuable lesson of laziness and non-productivity. As a result, one employee can negatively affect the whole organization and cause a chain reaction of bad attitudes toward work. Eventually, bad habits and negative attitudes of employees may threaten organizational safety. Gossiping may lead to information leakages. Withholding important information may disrupt the stability and operation of the organization’s security systems. Employees who do not share information with others will not let their colleagues and co-workers cope with their job tasks. Consequentially, other employees may fall victims to the bad habits and negative attitudes of their co-workers. What to do with employees and their bad habits depends upon the situation. No matter the seriousness of the problem, firing an inefficient employee should always be a measure of
